چکیده
Orderly development requires extensive coordination and communication between cells. Much of this is provided by extracellular proteins (growth factors) that positively and negatively regulate proliferation, differentiation, migration/pathfinding and survival/death. This is achieved via transmembrane receptors that transduce growth factor binding to a cascade of intracellular signaling events that culminate in both transcription-independent and transcription-dependent changes in target cell behavior. A number of growth factor superfamilies have been recognized along with their specific transmembrane receptors. Several specific examples are presented to illustrate the many roles of growth factors in promoting development. These reveal the complexity of feedback mechanisms by which growth factors coordinate embryogenesis. There are several distinct types of mechanisms by which growth factor signaling is accomplished.

Effects of pretreatment with basic fibroblast growth factor, epidermal growth factor and nerve growth factor on neuron survival and neovascularization of superior cervical ganglion transplanted into the third ventricle in rats.
Effects of short-term treatment with basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) on neurite outgrowth of superior cervical ganglia (SCG) in culture or on neuron survival and neovascularization of SCG in a transplantation system were examined in rats. SCG were preincubated with FGF, EGF and/or NGF for 30 min and cultured with drug-free medium...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF ENDURANCE TRAINING ON GENE EXPRESSION OF NERVE AND FIBROBLAST GROWTH FACTORS IN THE HIPPOCAMPUS OF RATS AFTER BRAIN STROKE
Background & Aims: Neurotrophic and growth factors are known to have positive effects on neuronal proliferation. However, findings on the effects of exercise training on these factors following brain stroke are limited. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of endurance training on gene expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) in the ...
متن کاملP-107: Vitrification and In Vitro Culture of Mouse Preantral Follicles in Presence of Growth Factors
Background: Cryopreservation of oocytes is an effective technology in assisted reproductive technology. Although successful vitrification of gametes has been reported in several mammalian species, the survival is generally low. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) on preantral follicle development after vitrifi...
متن کاملSelective and Nonselective Stimulation of Central Cholinergic and Dopaminergic Development in v&o by Nerve Growth Factor, Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor, Epidermal Growth Factor, Insulin and the Insulin-like Growth Factors I and II
To study the selectivity of neurotrophic actions in the brain, we analyzed the actions of several known growth factors on septal cholinergic, pontine cholinergic, and mesencephalic dopaminergic neurons in culture. Similar to nerve growth factor (NGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) stimulated choline acetyltransferase activity in septal cultures. In contrast to NGF, bFGF also enhanced do...
متن کاملEffects of epidermal growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, and transforming growth factor-beta on corneal cell chemotaxis.
The effects of recombinant basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) on migration of human and bovine corneal cells were determined using checkerboard analysis in Boyden chambers. EGF, FGF, and TGF-beta each stimulated high levels of chemotactic migration. Each growth factor, however, induced a different dose-response pat...
